Champion Foods LLC has voluntarily recalled certain batches of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread, after determining that a seasoning blend used in the product contained milk powder linked to an earlier California Dairies, Inc. recall involving potential Salmonella contamination.
The recall, announced in coordination with the FDA, affects select lots of the frozen bread product. According to Champion Foods, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall.
While the action involves a single retail product, the development is notable because it represents another downstream impact of the California Dairies milk powder recall – highlighting how food safety concerns can extend through multiple levels of the food supply chain.
Champion Foods said the milk powder entered its production process through a third-party seasoning blend supplier rather than through a direct ingredient purchase.
The company also noted that testing conducted by the seasoning supplier returned negative results for Salmonella. Nevertheless, because the seasoning blend contained milk powder associated with the California Dairies recall, Champion Foods elected to voluntarily remove affected products from the market.
Why Did Milk Powder Spark a Retail Recall?
This recall demonstrates how a food-safety issue identified in a single ingredient can ultimately affect finished products several steps downstream in the supply chain.
In this case, the affected milk powder was incorporated into a seasoning blend before being used in a finished retail product, creating exposure for a manufacturer that didn’t source the ingredient directly.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause gastrointestinal illness and may pose more serious risks for young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Although contamination hasn’t been confirmed in the finished cheese bread product, the recall reflects the precautionary approach often taken when ingredients are linked to broader food-safety concerns.
For food manufacturers and suppliers, the action illustrates how an ingredient recall can extend beyond the original supplier and affect companies further down the supply chain. The Motor City Pizza Co. recall illustrates the broader impact that upstream ingredient issues can have on manufacturers, brands, and retailers as companies work to identify affected products and manage potential food-safety risks.
