Honeybees Vital to Almond Market’s Future

As pollination activities pick up in California's almond-bearing regions, a migrant workforce is ready to do their jobs. The arrivals are not humans, but rather honeybees.

About 2.5 million honeybee colonies will be moved into California orchards through February to pollinate the state's 1.2 million bearing acres of almond trees. And as another 300,000 almond acres are expected to enter production over the next few years, it is expected an additional 600,000 honeybee hives will be needed, reported Ag Alert (Jan. 22).
