Although regulatory actions and a new food pyramid are pressing food manufacturers to rethink their product formulations, consumer demand is propelling the drive towards a healthier food system, giving food companies little choice but to adapt to an ever-evolving health and wellness landscape.
Petroleum-Based Food Dyes to Sunset by 2027
In April 2025, HHS and FDA announced an initiative to phase out petroleum-based food dyes from the U.S. food supply. As of early February 2026, FDA said it was working closely with food manufacturers, retailers, and trade associations to remove the six remaining certified color additives frequently used in the food supply by 2027.
