Production of both cattle and calves and hogs and pigs in the U.S. and Canada are on the rise, according to a pair of joint reports issued by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and Statistics Canada.
All cattle and calves in the U.S. and Canada totaled about 116 million head on July 1, representing a 4% increase from 2016, according to NASS and Statistics Canada. All cows and heifers that have calved jumped 5% from 2015 to 46.6 million head.
All cattle and calves in the U.S. as of the July 1 date, totaled 103 million head, 4% above the 98.2 million head on July 1, 2015. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 41.9 million head, were up 5% from 2015. All cattle and calves in Canada as of July 1 totaled 13.0 million head, up slightly from the 12.9 million head on July 1, 2016. All cows and heifers that have calved, at about 4.7 million head, were up 1% from a year ago.
Meanwhile, U.S. and Canadian inventory of all hogs and pigs totaled 85.8 million head in June, a 3% increase from 2016 and a 7% increase from 2015, according to NASS and Statistics Canada. Market hog inventory, at 78.4 million head, was up 3% from last year and up 7% from 2015. The semi-annual pig crop, at 78.5 million head, was up 4% from 2016 and up 7% from 2015. Sows farrowing during this period totaled about 7.3 million head, up 3% from last year and up 5% from 2015.
U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1 was 71.7 million head. This was up 3% from June 1, 2016 and up 1% from March 1. The breeding inventory, at about 6.1 million head, was up 2% from last year, and up slightly from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 65.6 million head, was up 4% from last year, and up 1% from last quarter. The pig crop, at 32.3 million head, was up 4% from 2016 and up 9% from 2015. Sows farrowing during this period totaled about 3.1 million head, up 3% from 2016 and up 7% from 2015.
Canadian inventory of all hogs and pigs on July 1 was 14.1 million head. This was up 2% from July 1, 2016 and up 6% from July 1, 2015. The breeding inventory, at about 1.3 million head, was up 1% from last year and up 2% from 2015. Market hog inventory, at 12.9 million head, was up 2% from last year and up 6% from 2015. The semi-annual pig crop, at 14.9 million head, was up 3% from 2016 and up 5% from 2015. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 1.27 million head, up 1% from last year and up 2% from 2015.
