Demographics of Consumer Food Spending, 2017 Edition
For the past three years at the Food Institute, I’ve been tasked with compiling the data for our annual Demographics of Consumer Food Spending book. Using the most recent data available from the Bureau of Labor statistics, we take an in-depth look at how people are spending their money on food.
The book provides an easy-to-read breakdown of spending on food overall, food at-home (in 24 categories & sub-categories including beef, poultry, fruits & vegetables, dairy products and bakery products) and food away-from-home. Topics covered include age, income, career, education, race, gender and region of the U.S.
For example, did you know:
- Mean consumer spending increased to a ten-year high in 2015, increasing $2,483 from 2014?
- Total food expenditures in 2015 were $7,023, a full $264 more than the prior year?
- The highest-earning segment, $200,000 and over, spent $15,210 spent on food?
- The 28.2 million consumer units in the West spent the most on food in 2015, at an average of $7,776?
This is just a small glimpse of what is covered in the book. Demographics of Consumer Food Spending, 2017 Edition can be purchased in print or as a pdf for $139.
