Foxtrot and Dom’s Kitchen & Market have closed their doors effective immediately, according to an April 23 statement released by Foxtrot on its social media accounts.
The closure will affect 33 Foxtrot locations and 2 Dom’s Kitchen & Market locations across the Chicago, Austin, Dallas and Washington D.C. areas.
The retail company stated that it “has explored many avenues to continue the business but found no viable option.
“This decision has not been made lightly,” the statement continued. “…It has been our highest honor to elevate the everyday and create a remarkable shopping experience for people who love food as much as we do. … We genuinely appreciate your understanding during this challenging time.
“We would like to thank our team members who have committed themselves over the years to providing a unique selection of quality foods and creating an outstanding in-store customer experience.”
One sign at the Foxtrot located at 900 West Armitage Avenue in Chicago said that the company was allegedly $180,000,000 “in the hole.” The sign also said, “(Not a joke),” reported Fox 32.
The announcement comes following a merger between the two chains in November 2023 after which they operated under the name Outfox Hospitality.
In a November statement, Foxtrot CEO Liz Williams said the two brands “shared a common mission of modernizing the way people shop,” and merged to “move the retail industry forward.”
Foxtrot was founded in Chicago in 2013 by Mike LaVitola and Taylor Bloom as an online-only alcohol and food delivery company. The company expanded into brick-and-mortar locations across multiple metropolitan areas in the years that followed, boosted in part by a $100 million Series C funding raise in January 2022.
A modern convenience store chain with an all-day café and a 30-minute delivery app, Foxtrot differentiated itself from other retailers and quick-commerce players by offering a wide selection of food and beverages and a specialty coffee shop experience, while deriving about half its revenue from e-commerce sales.
