I remember when I first began my career with the Food Institute, I was a bit flustered by the enormity of it all. At times, the food industry can seem like a mammoth. Regulatory issues, food safety procedures, marketing, supply chains and more all converge to provide people with one of the most basic cornerstones of life: food.
And this has definitely changed my viewpoint on food in general. The next time you enter a supermarket, you may find yourself asking, "who really is responsible for this avocado sitting in this bin?"
Although there are a myriad answers to that question, at least USDA is providing us with a snapshot of what the typical U.S. farm is like. The agency recently released the 2017 edition of America's Diverse Family Farms, and the results are illuminating.
Overall, most farms in the U.S. are small, family affairs. Ninety percent of U.S. farms are classified as "small," and these farms accounted for 51% of the land operated by farms in 2016. Large-scale family farms accounted for the largest share of production, at 45%. Family farms of various types together accounted for 98.8% of farms and 90% of production in 2016.
Small farms are more likely to have an operating profit margin (OPM) in the red zone-indicating a higher risk of financial problems-but some are more profitable. Each type of small family farm had between 54 and 77% of its farms in the red zone, with an OPM of less than 10%, in 2016.
Most small farms in the red zone had a negative operating margin, the result of losses from farming. Other small farms were more profitable: 13 to 26% of each small farm group had an OPM in the low-risk green zone, with a margin greater than 25%.
Nevertheless, an even greater share of midsize (34%) and large-scale farms (47 and 40%) had an OPM greater than 25%. In addition, a majority of midsize and large-scale farms operated outside the red zone.
On the other side, nonfamily operations accounted for the remaining farms (1%) and production (10%). About 19% of nonfamily farms had gross cash farm income (GCFI) of $1,000,000 or more, and they accounted for 88% of nonfamily farms' production. Examples of nonfamily farms include partnerships of unrelated partners, closely held nonfamily corporations, farms with a hired operator unrelated to the owners, and (relatively few) publicly held corporations.

Food retailers are likely to be pressured by low online penetration and a highly competitive market through 2023, according to research from Morgan Stanley. While the U.S. grocery industry generated $840 billion in sales in 2017, growing 4% annually, and is the largest retail category at 18.5% of sales, the grocery category has the lowest online penetration in the U.S., at 3%, compared to more than 10% for total retail sales.read more
